Quotes:

1984 – “The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever the wanted to. You had to live- did live, from habit that became instinct- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinised.”

There are many common elements in dystopian texts. One unifying idea between the texts Nineteen Eighty-Four, Minority Report, A Clockwork Orange and Handmaids Tale is the invasion of privacy. The totalitarian states in these texts cross the boundary and invade the privacy of individual’s lives so much to the point the very thoughts of the individuals are controlled.

The first text that I will talk about is the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four written my George Orwell. The way in which the state invades the private lives of individuals and has control over them is through the telescreens placed almost everywhere. These telescreens are in every room of the state and are constantly watching every individual. These individuals are forced to believe in everything that the state wishes them to believe, and do everything they went them to do. If they go against this and break the rules they will be punished or “vaporised”. This then leads most individuals to think the way the state wants them to think. Even the very thought of going against Big Brother can get you into trouble with the thought-police. “It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself–anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide.” This shows that… The idea of constantly being watched also links to the film minority report.

In the film Minority report, all individuals are constantly being watched too, but instead of telescreens, the citizens eyes are constantly being scanned. The state knows exactly where everybody is at every time and what they are doing.
